This course is for all Scouters - Boy Scout, Cub Scout, Varsity, and Venturing leaders, and district and council leaders.  Wood Badge focuses on strengthening every volunteer's ability to work with groups of youth and adults.  The course teaches participants the basics of listening, communicating, valuing people, team development, situational leadership, problem solving, and managing conflict.  Join us for the Boy Scouts of America's premier adult volunteer training experience in 2008!

What is Wood Badge?

21st Century Wood Badge is the advanced training program for all Scout leaders in the Boy Scouts of America.  This includes all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity and Venturing Leaders, as well as Professional Scouters.  Wood Badge is designed to train adult volunteers using the latest leadership skills and techniques.

Wood Badge is divided into two parts, the Practical Phase and the Application Phase.  The Practical Phase in the course will be covered over two 3-day weekends in August 2008.  A key area of this phase is the process of team developmen.  Participants will leard to aply appropriate leadership strategies that enable teams to reach their highest level of performance.  The participant will use these leadership skills to develop a set of goals that they will want to accomplish in the Scouting position.

In the Applicaiton Phase, participants will use the leadership skills that were learned and developed during the Practical Phase.  Each Scouter will work with a Troop Guide to help them succesfully accomplish the goals that they developed within an 18 month time period.

Who is Eligible to Attend?

Wood Badge is designed to meet the advanced training needs of adult Scouters.  Today's Wood Badge course brings together Scouters from all walks of life and from all BSA programs--Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting and Venturing, as well as district and council leaders.

Prospective participants must be fully commited to the scout Oath and Law and have successfully demonstrated good Scouting spirit.  The course is a group experience, and sucess is dependent upon the cooperative attitude of all concerned.


How to qualify:   You can participate in this exciting experiencee when you:

1.  Are a currently registered adult Scouter and active in a Cub Scout Pack, Boy Scout Troop, Varsity Team, Venturing Crew, a District or Council position.

2.  Have completed basic training for your Scouting position.

3.  Have completed the outdoor skills training program, if applicable, for your Scouting position.

4.  Register online and make a deposit to reserve your place (then remit the fee balance in schedulted installments).  All registration and fees should be returned to:

5.  Be capable of functioning safely in an outdoor environment.  as such participants must submit a completed Class 3 physical form signed by a physician within the last year at least 30 days in advance of the course.

6.  Preference will be given to those Scouters who have not previously attended Wood Badge.  However, attendees of any previous WB Course prior to 2000 are now eligible to attend Wood Bage for the 21st Century, if this course is not filled.


The Objectives of Wood Badge

The overall objective of Wood Badge training is leadership development.

Wood Badge has several specific objectives:

  • Understand and learn to apply the leadership skills to your Scouting position as a member of a successful team.
  • Understand how all of the parts of the programs of Scouting (Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing) work together.
  • Recognize the contemporary leadership concepts utilized in corporate America that are relevant to our values-based movement.
  • Enjoy the spirit and camaraderie of a Wood Badge experience.
  • Encourage a recommitment to Scouting.
  • And of course, because Scouting is a game with a purpose, expect to have a lot of fun!
